Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Nov 20, 2006

The Institution of Engineering and Technology is actively supporting F1 in Schools, a company that promotes engineering to young people around the world through the magnetic appeal of Formula One.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology has announced it will be actively supporting F1 in Schools, a company that promotes engineering to young people around the world through the magnetic appeal of Formula One.

A not-for-profit company, F1 in Schools is a multidisciplinary challenge in which teams of students aged 11-18 deploy CAD/CAM software to design, analyse, manufacture and test miniature CO2-powered balsawood F1 cars.

The challenge, which now operates in 22 countries, inspires students to use IT to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacture, branding, graphics, sponsorship, marketing, leadership/teamwork, media skills and financial strategy and apply them in a practical, imaginative, competitive and exciting way.

The IET will be sponsoring the 14-16 D-Type award in the UK both regionally and nationally.

The award recognises the skills gained in the design, development, testing and evaluation of their model Formula One car.

Also the use of CAD/CAM (computer aided design and manufacture), quality of manufacture, verbal and written presentation and speed.

This award will be presented to the eleven regional winners across the UK.

The IET will also be presenting the 14-16 "D Type" award at the National Championships, with a trophy and prizes presented to the teams in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in this award category.

In addition to supporting the awards, the F1 in Schools team has recently moved to the IET's headquarters at Savoy Place in London.

Andrew Denford, Founder and Chairman of F1 in schools said: "The F1 in Schools team are delighted to have the support of the IET, the largest engineering and technology organisation in Europe".

"We are looking forward to developing a long and successful relationship with an Institution that is also strongly involved and committed to raising the profile of engineering to young people".

"We are proud to be part of the forthcoming Faraday Lectures based around the world of Motorsport and which attracts so many students throughout the UK".

"This will further strengthen the partnership we have already created with the IET".

Dr Alf Roberts, Chief Executive of the IET said: "The IET is delighted to be a supporter of F1 in Schools, which is one of the most innovative organisations to successfully engage and enthuse young people across the globe in engineering, design and technology".

"The institution fully supports this initiative, which not only provides an insight into an exciting, cutting edge industry but also equips young people with other key skills, such as team work and leadership, which are invaluable to their professional development".
