Awards programme offers almost GBP 1 million worth of scholarships, bursaries and awards to encourage a greater take up of university engineering and technology courses.

The IET has launched an awards programme that provides access to almost GBP 1 million worth of scholarships, bursaries and awards to engineering students and professionals.

The funding has been provided to encourage a greater take up of engineering and technology courses at university to address the growing skills shortages within the profession.

Robin McGill, Chief Executive and Secretary of the IET said: "The perception of engineering, skills shortages and concerns about the take up of science, technology, engineering and maths in the education system are issues which are of great concern to us".

"With the growing financial burden on students, the IET believes that scholarships will encourage more young people to consider studying engineering which opens up well paid and interesting careers".

The IET's scholarships and bursaries are offered as part of the IET's Ambition awards programme.

One of the IET's flagship scholarships, the Power Academy is a unique partnership between the IET, the power industry and Universities, which was set up in response to the shortage of Power engineers in the UK.

Power Academy students are supported financially with their studies but are also offered work placements with the sponsoring companies.

The IET also offers 50 undergraduate awards to student who are about to embark on an IET accredited degree course, plus The Belling Engineering scholarship, which offers outstanding students GBP 3000 per year for the duration of their degree course.
