Water filter/kettle competes for innovation award

An Institution of Engineering and Technology product story

Filket sers do not have to dispose of bulky plastic water filter systems and only change a thin recyclable membrane.

The Filket is a combined water filter and kettle that incorporates a new type of recyclable filter membrane, and it has been entered into the Institution of Engineering and Technology's (IET) Innovation Awards.

The concept is the work of Mamta Singhal, a Glasgow-based engineer.

Filket addresses key environmental issues as it uses the minimum amount of water and electricity.

In addition, it includes an environmentally friendly filter membrane which has an innovative filter indicator.

Users do not have to dispose of bulky plastic water filter systems and only change a thin recyclable membrane.

Mamta said: "I came up with the concept while living in a cramped flat in west London".

"I had a water filter and a kettle, as well as numerous other appliances, which were all taking up lots of space".

"The Filket combines a kettle and water filter but also addresses the problems that current kettles and filtering systems have".

"The design is stylish, practical and environmentally sound, as the filter itself is the first of its kind to be recyclable, unlike the typical sand-based filter that is currently used".

The Filket has been entered into three categories in the Innovation Awards - Power and Energy, Product Design and Sustainability.

IET Chief Executive, Robin McGill, said, "The Innovation Awards provide an excellent opportunity for innovators to promote the business and user benefits of their creative designs".

"This particular innovation addresses a number of topical issues and is effective in addressing consumer and environmental needs".

Now in their fourth year, the IET Innovation Awards highlights the importance of innovation by celebrating its application across a range of engineering disciplines from across the world.

The closing date for entries is 25th July, 2008.
