Enter the IET Faraday competition

An Institution of Engineering and Technology product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Nov 21, 2008

Cimex has created an exciting and engaging website for IET Faraday, the Institution of Engineering and Technology's (IET) education website.

It is based around this year's Faraday theme of engineering in sport.

The site takes an in-depth look at how the Wii is engineered, explores the development of Skeleton Bob - the latest in bobsleigh technology, and explains the impact that the revolutionary new material d30 is having in protective clothing using interviews with the engineering heroes behind each project.

The content developed by Cimex addresses the school audience of students from 11 to 18 studying for a range of related subjects and the new curriculum for the engineering diploma launched in September.

The IET Faraday competition - open to schools and individuals - challenges entrants to develop a product using new intelligent material d3o which is featured on the website.

Richard Palmer, the owner of the company named after its material d3o, has teamed up with IET Faraday, to encourage schools to develop a new product using this innovative material.

Entries will be assessed by a team of judges, including Richard Palmer.

Entering is simple.

All schools need to do is think of a product (existing or new) that utilises the properties of d3o and transforms it into a world-beating concept.

Ideas need to be submitted in A4 format (on paper or electronically) and should present the concept in any appropriate way such as sketches, diagrams, annotations, pictures of models and so on.

An explanation about the target user group and why they would want to buy it rather than a similar product should be included.

Entrants also have the opportunity to submit an audio file to explain their idea.

Entries must be received by 5 December 2008.

Documents saved as an MS-Word or PDF document can be emailed to faraday@theiet.org.

Hard copies can be posted to: Faraday 08/09 Competition, Education 5-19, The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Michael Faraday House, Six Hills Way, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, SG1 2AY.
