For the first time, spring associations from around the world have come together to work on a common challenge.

For the first time, spring associations from around the world have come together to work on a common challenge.

The European Spring Federation (ESF), the Japanese Spring Manufacturers Association (JSMA) and the Spring Manufacturers Institute of America (SMI) commissioned the Institute of Spring Technology (IST) to obtain a consensus on the technical details for the application of tolerances for compression springs, in order to work towards developing an international standard.

Currently there is no international or European standard for compression spring tolerances.

Yet with the ever increasing international element in manufacturing there is an increasing problem for both spring manufacturers and users as nations still operate with their own and different national standards.

Consequently within this study, national standards from around the world were analysed and compared to highlight where the discrepancies between them occurred.

Reports were issued to the participating organisation containing the comparison and asking specific questions to determine the requirements of the spring industry.

A document has now been produced containing the agreed technical details from the three organisations and a presentation made at this year's Wire Exhibition in Dusseldorf.

This document has now been forward to Union de Normalisation de la Mecanique (UNM) to develop it into an ISO standard under the ITA (Industrial Technical Agreement) procedure for publication in 2006.
