The IEC's system for certification of equipment used in explosive atmospheres, IECEx, is moving ahead with its plans to introduce a mark of conformity and it is now finalising the design.

The next steps involve the legal and administrative work required prior to a market launch, which could happen later in 2006.

Approval is also required from the IEC Conformity Assessment Board and IEC Council Board.

IECEx secretary Chris Agius says that a mark is important for regulators and users because it allows for quick identification of equipment designed and built for use in explosive atmospheres.

This helps with tenders and with equipment selection.

Since normal electrical equipment can look much like Ex equipment, and vice-versa, an IECEx mark will help to identify Ex equipment that is covered by the IECEx Independent Certification System.

At present, plans are for the mark to be applied to the IECEx certified equipment programme, not to service facilities.
