US patent protects heating process

An Inditherm product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jan 17, 2006

Inditherm has been granted a US patent for the electrical connection that distributes a safe low-voltage current to the unique carbon polymer on which its heating systems are based.

Inditherm, the provider of innovative heating solutions to the food, industrial process, utility, medical, construction and sport industries, was recently granted a US patent for the electrical connection that distributes a safe low-voltage current to the unique carbon polymer on which its heating systems are based.

The patent runs for 20 years from 1st June 2001, the date of original application, and complements an existing US patent for the polymer technology itself.

The patent covers "a device for connecting a source of electrical power to a coating or film incorporating carbon particles".

The main benefits include: electrical efficiency gains; a more uniform heating effect over a relatively large area, without the hotspots associated with many other technologies; and the elimination of the potential for electrical arcing - crucial for applications in hazardous environments.

Commenting on the patent grant, Jonathan Mosby, Technical Manager at Inditherm, said: "This new patent was initially filed with medical products, such as our heated blankets for operating theatres, in mind".

"In the period since filing, however, we have been actively researching and developing a wider portfolio of applications".

"All of the resulting products - from industrial process heating, to sports turf heating systems and concrete curing - also rely on the same method of electrical connection".

Commenting on the patent grant, Richard Harpum, Chief Executive Officer, said: "It is satisfying that our technology has been recognised as inventive and unique under US patent law".

"The IP protection provided by this further patent will give Inditherm both additional security and competitive advantage as we grow our US business".
