The Royal Dutch/Shell Group (Shell) has signed agreements with the Process and Building Solutions division of Intergraph Corporation for global purchase of INtools instrumentation software

The Royal Dutch/Shell Group (Shell) has signed agreements with the Process and Building Solutions division of Intergraph Corporation for global purchase of INtools instrumentation software and delivery of joint INtools services Intergraph Process and Building Solutions will supply INtools instrumentation engineering software to Shell affiliates which operate process manufacturing facilities in Europe, the Middle and Far East, Africa and the Americas

The agreements are based on a number of successful project and plant implementations of INtools.

In some projects, this included implementation of an interface to existing maintenance management systems such as SAP R/3 and Pacer.

Shell companies not already using INtools plan to use the software in all new projects globally, making INtools the recommended standard for instrumentation engineering throughout the Shell Group.

INtools Supports Shell's Instrumentation Life Cycle Shell affiliates use INtools for managing instrumentation data during design, engineering, commissioning, operation, systems maintenance, upgrades and re-vamps or during expansion projects in a variety of plants, ranging from oil refineries and petroleum production to polymer and plastics manufacturing facilities.

Through INtools, authorised engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) personnel, engineers, managers, operators, maintenance staff and technicians can access up-to-date and accurate instrumentation data.

The information includes, for example, the instrument index, specification and data sheets, wiring, loops, calibration and history data of instruments.

The single and accurate instrument data repository is easily accessible and contributes to an efficient, operable, maintainable and safe process manufacturing and operation.

INtools Contributes to Plant Efficiency "Instrumentation data, such as equipment and wiring information, is particularly suited for management and access within a solution such as INtools," said Peter Ideler, consultant, Instrumentation and Plant Automation, Shell Global Solutions International.

"Based on our experience with the software, Shell recognises the technical and business benefits that can be obtained by using INtools for instrumentation engineering and systems maintenance.

High data accuracy and accessibility, concurrent engineering and effective instrumentation engineering information management afforded by INtools all contribute to plant efficiency, safety and profitability." According to Willy Schneider, senior consultant, Operations and Asset Management, Shell Services International (SSI), use of INtools in a number of projects - through the application of a standardised template provided by SSI - has increased data quality, data handover proficiency and productivity for both EPC and Shell companies.

As SSI has gained considerable experience with INtools projects, the worldwide agreements provide a framework for receiving services from SSI, Intergraph Process and Building Solutions and Shell Global Solutions International.

This ensures that the parties will deliver added value in INtools projects to any customer.

SSI is the acting party for establishing purchase and service agreements on behalf of Shell.

Stanlow Refinery Exemplifies Shell's INtools Deployments The incentive for a purchase agreement and selection of INtools software was based on successful implementations at several Shell facilities, including the company's refinery in Stanlow, UK.

The Stanlow project included migration of the existing maintenance data consisting of 160,000 instrument tags (building 120,000 loops) and associated instrument specification and calibration data to INtools; bi-directional interface between INtools and SAP R/3; and installation and training.

Similar existing and future implementations of the software at Shell facilities include INtools as the central repository of instrument data.

In addition, INtools interfaces with the plant maintenance management system.

Users can view INtools instrument data directly from their SAP R/3 maintenance management module, while the respective databases are synchronised when changes are made.

INtools Supports Comprehensive Instrumentation Engineering In an integrated Microsoft Windows environment, INtools provides functionality for crucial instrumentation engineering, design and data management tasks.

INtools features a straightforward, easy-to-use interface that reduces training needs and increases productivity.

Design and data consistency checks reduce errors and improve data accuracy.

INtools supports the life cycle of the plant, from design and construction to operation and maintenance, including retrofits.

The software includes modules for instrument indexes, specifications, process data, calculation, wiring, loop drawings, hook-ups, commissioning, calibration and maintenance.

INtools supports fieldbus systems and runs with standard database software, including Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server or Sybase(tm) SQL Anywhere(tm).

Data links for external systems include those to the Intergraph Plant Design System (PDS(tm)), Intergraph SmartPlant P and ID, SAP R/3, plant maintenance management systems, non-Intergraph plant design software, vendor calculation packages and distributed control systems.
