HMIs for Siemens' GSM-R digital radiocommunications systems provide voice and ETCS (European Train Control System) data in an Eirene compliant environment.

IGT Industries has designed and manufactured three different HMIs for Siemens' GSM-R digital radiocommunications systems, providing voice and ETCS (European Train Control System) data in an Eirene compliant environment.

Units are installed in each locomotive and trackside infrastructure; the ETCS is being rolled out across Europe to give a standardised signalling environment to enable trains to operate more easily across national boundaries.

The initial units are for use in The Netherlands, Norway and the UK; other variants are currently in development.

The units conform to the demanding railway specifications for EMC, shock, vibration and thermal extremes.

The operating keys are backlit for use in low light conditions, embossed and tactile to give positive feedback on operation.

The vacuum florescent display, which is integrated into the subassembly, has a special filter overlay layer applied as part of the membrane to ensure that the display is readable in direct sunlight.

To ensure that the units are maintained within the specified operating temperature range, two DC fans are fitted at the rear of the assembly to provide assisted cooling.

To simplify test, maintenance, software upgrades and firmware changes, the HMI is configured as a single complete assembly that plugs directly into the main chassis with interconnect achieved via precision multiway connectors.
