Ball and socket joints simplify designs
Ball and socket joints simplify product designs and give predictable life.
Ball and socket joints are more than simple links for moving applications The design features can crucially simplify the construction and improve the technical merits of an application
On this basis igus has optimised its in-line and right-angled ball and socket joints.
The consequent three-part design has a wear-resistant iglidur polymer liner, which guarantees an exceptional service life.
It also absorbs micro vibrations and minimises noise and can be installed rapidly and easily by hand.
The retention forces are much higher than the joining forces and guarantee stability even in the most extreme applications.
The new DIN 71802 polymer ball and socket joint from the igubal range can be used as a 90deg coupling element for pneumatic cylinders, gas struts and tie bars and is available with M5, M6, M8 and M10 threads.
Since it automatically adjusts to any misalignment, the design is greatly simplified.
The ball and socket joints are maintenance-free, corrosion- and wear-resistant, making them suitable for use in a wide range of industries.
Temperature fluctuation from -30 to + 80deg C is no problem for ball and socket joints.
The combination with metallic DIN parts like rivet pins and threaded ball studs is also attractive for designers.
The inner liner may consist of one of 20 possible iglidur materials depending on the application.
This broad selection, together with the compact design, allows numerous application possibilities.
They can be used in the agricultural industry, where the environment requires the joints to be maintenance free and insensitive to abrasion; tractors and precision sowing machines benefit from design features tolerant of dirt and resistant against manure.
The igubal ball and socket joints are also used in the throttle lever mechanism found in special purpose vehicles.
Convertible vehicles require reduced noise, no need for maintenance and misalignment compensation.
In this case the plastic housing is combined with a metal ball stud.
Corrosion resistance and low weight are important for the lift mechanism of a bicycle trailer.
The ball and socket joints can even be applied where chemical resistance is needed or hygiene regulations apply.
Cost, weight reduction and corrosion resistance are major concerns in the rail industry, which is why a leading manufacturer of rail ventilators chose ball and socket joints from igus.
igus' innovative ball and socket joints have also reached the field of music: in an organ the parts connect the tie bar, which links the keys via the blower up to individual pipes.
Once again low weight and vibration damping are the advantages.
igus says it is the first manufacturer to put bearing technology online so that a complete bearing lifetime calculation is only a click away.
The only requirement is to enter some parameters of the application into the fields and immediately an expert system will calculate the lifetime online.
This is not merely a theoretical calculation: the basis of all calculations is data obtained from practical tests conducted continuously in igus laboratories. Request a free brochure from Igus UK ...
