DES to host bearing design contest

The European Vector Award competition showcases three novel applications of Igus energy chains.
The contest is designed to promote awareness of the benefits of plastic bearings to potential users and to highlight new, original ways of implementing them.
A seminar at DES will showcase the most challenging applications, honouring those with the courage and tenacity to implement plastic bearings.
Cash prizes totalling GBP 4000 will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners at a separate awards ceremony on 15th September 2004.
The seminar will be the first opportunity for press and public to see the top three applications and discover why plastic bearings were chosen over traditional bronze or metal bearings.
Visitors can register for the seminar on the DES website.
Organisations in an array of industries from inspection equipment to textile machinery to food manufacturing have already submitted compelling and ingenious plastic bearing applications.
The top three winners will claim prizes of GBP 2500, GBP 1000 and GBP 500, a Manus trophy and certificate of recognition.
"The response so far has been fantastic", says Matthew Aldridge, Product Director for Bearings at Igus UK.
"We couldn't have asked for a better reaction.
Customers are enthusiastic, excited to participate and more than willing to tell their story and the benefits of using a plastic bearing".

The entries will be judged by a jury comprising Prof John Hetherington, Head of Engineering at Cranfield University, Andy Pye, Managing Editor of Engineeringtalk, and Aldridge.
Applications are still being accepted until 31st August 2004.
