In September 2003, IAS achieved acceptance for the shape control technology upgrade for the No 7 Tandem Cold Mill at Weirton Steel Corporation, Weirton, West Virginia, USA.

The shape control technology incorporated software and hardware to control strip flatness, a new air bearing shape measuring roll, segmented coolant spray bars and work roll bending servo control.

The scope also included mechanical modifications to the exit of the mill to accommodate the new equipment as well as modifications to the existing work roll and backup roll chocks, plus a new entry guide box for the last mill stand.

The integrated solution from IAS incorporated equipment from Tippins, Shape Technology, United States Controls and Airtek.

IAS process expertise also assisted Weirton to optimise roll profiles to improve the shape performance.
