IIE seeks young women

An IIE, The Institution of Incorporated Engineers product story

Why is it that only 19% of all engineers in the UK are women?

Engineering is a practical, creative, diverse and for the most part, well-paid profession so why is it that only 19% of all engineers in the UK are women? Could it be that there are simply not enough women role models in this male dominated profession? The Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award continues to address this problem and, in its 25th year, IIE is seeking a bright, ambitious and outgoing young woman to receive the 2002 Award.

As the most prestigious National Award for Women Engineers in the UK, the Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award for 2002 follows on from the success of the previous year, where Clare Roberts, a Design Engineer from Leeds, was presented with the award.

Clare typifies what it means to be a professional woman in the engineering arena and has travelled the country, acting as a role model, helping to attract women into a profession where they are considerably under-represented.

But the search for the 2002 winner starts now and, like Clare, this year's winner will be a technically excellent engineer who has charisma and is able to project success in the press, on television and radio, at public events, and in visits to schools and colleges.

Jointly sponsored by IIE and The Caroline Haslett Memorial Trust, the winner of the award will receive a cheque for GBP 1000 and a silver rose bowl at a special ceremony held in London in October 2002.

The runner-up will receive the WISE/IBM prize of GBP 600.

This year the 2002 award also looks to the future, and the Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award will be joined by the Ford WISE Prize for female engineering students.

This new prize will be awarded to students in their penultimate year of study at a UK University or college, in an engineering discipline.

There will be an award in two categories, one for a student on a course that provides the academic foundation for Incorporated Engineering registration, and one for the equivalent leading to Chartered Engineering Registration.
