Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Sep 27, 2002

The Young Women Engineer of the Year competition continues to challenge the perceptions of the engineering and technology community as it announces the six finalists for 2002.

25 years and still going strong, The Young Women Engineer of the Year competition continues to challenge the perceptions of the engineering and technology community as it announces the six finalists for 2002.

With young women continuing to prove themselves to be as ambitious, creative and as highly skilled as any man, the Award has become the definitive date in the diary of all young women engineers.

Sponsored by The Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE) the Caroline Haslett Memorial Trust and supported by BT, the award ceremony will take place on the 29th October 2002 at the ultramodern BT Centre, London.

The ceremony will be hosted by IIE with the prestigious award presented by UK Education Secretary Estelle Morris.

With this year's finalists coming from a wide variety of backgrounds, from an ICA technician to a flight systems engineer, competition for the prestigious award is tougher than ever.

The 2002 finalists are: Sara Atkinson (BAE Systems); Faye Banks (Linpac Plastics); Charmaine Briggs (AMS); Helena Hutt (Thames Water); Emma Reynolds (BAE Systems); and Carly Worth (Westland Helicopters).

The winner of the main award will receive a cheque for GBP 1000 kindly donated by BT, a silver rose bowl and a certificate, while the runner-up will also receive a certificate and the WISE/IBM prize of GBP 500.

The winner of the Mary George Memorial Prize (offered to a younger entrant who, whilst academically eligible, has yet to gain the experience and responsibility required for the main award) will receive a cheque for GBP 500, a silver salver and a certificate.

The Ford Wise Prize 2002 will be presented in conjunction with The Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award.

This significant new award recognises the achievements of young women engineering students in their penultimate year of study in UK universities.

By selecting excellent role models, the sponsors Ford and WISE (Women into Science and Engineering), wish to attract more young women to study engineering, They have worked to identify suitable candidates with the support of the course accreditation departments of The Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), The Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE), and The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

The 2002 finalists are: Catriona Coleman, The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen; and Jennifer Pritchard, University of Sheffield.

Each winner will receive a cheque for GBP 500, donated by Ford, and a certificate.
