Why is it that only 6% of professional engineers in the UK are women in an industry that increasingly values them?

Why is it that only 6% of professional engineers in the UK are women in an industry that increasingly values them? Is it because still there are simply not enough women role models in this male dominated profession? The Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award aims to redress this and IIE is seeking a bright, ambitious and outgoing young woman to receive the 2004 award.

Grace Johnstone, 2003's winner, has proved to be an ideal role model and was eager to embrace her title which brought with it the responsibility of challenging the perceptions of engineering that society holds.

Since receiving her award she has visited schools and colleges and received a great deal of media coverage.

Sharing her enthusiasm for a profession she enjoys immensely, she has encouraged others to consider it for their future.

But the search for the 2004 winner is now on, and like Johnstone, this year's winner will be a dynamic and technically excellent engineer who has charisma and is able to project success in the press, on television and radio, at public events, and in visits to schools and colleges.

Jointly sponsored by IIE and The Caroline Haslett Memorial Trust, the winner of the award will receive a cheque for GBP 1000 and a silver rose bowl at a national ceremony in London on 18th November 2004.

The runner-up will receive the WES (Women's Engineering Society) prize of GBP 500.
