Carbon-fibre CMM has edge on speed and accuracy
The new Premier co-ordinate measuring machine from International Metrology Systems (IMS) has been hailed as a breakthrough in the CMM industry.
Formed in 1992 through the acquisition of Ferranti Metrology, the original inventor (in 1959) and pioneer of co-ordinate measuring machine technology, IMS produces contact and noncontact measurement systems in a wide variety of configurations.
These range from shop-floor mobile systems to large, gantry-style CMMs, although IMS also specialises in retrofits of modern controls and software to existing systems.
The company's most recent introduction, the IMS Premier CMM, features an all-carbon fibre moving structure - bridge beam, main carriage, support leg and column - with a very high stiffness to weight ratio.
This enables it to accelerate and decelerate considerably faster than conventional CMMs.
