A short course entitled "Insight into vibration" will be held at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research in Southampton, UK, from 6th to 8th December 2004.

Sophisticated equipment and software are readily available to aid engineers in designing trouble-free structures from a vibration viewpoint.

Finite element analysis and experimental modal analysis, for example, are becoming increasingly powerful and user-friendly.

However, it must be remembered that these are tools of the trade and not black boxes.

Engineering judgement must be exercised in all modelling and experimental activities to ensure against "garbage-in/garbage-out" and to interpret results to maximum effect.

This course aims to provide a firm grounding in the principles of vibration that underpin good engineering judgement.

The emphasis is on gaining physical insight into vibratory systems such the vibration response of a structure may be anticipated, at least in a qualitative sense, prior to modelling or testing.

The physical perspective encouraged by this course is helpful in unearthing mistakes before they become costly and flagging up cost-effective solutions to vibration problems.

The course is aimed at professional engineers in the automotive, marine and other industrial sectors with little to moderate background in vibrations and its applications.

Places are strictly limited due to the high practical content of the course.
