Passengers and crew aboard the Queen Mary 2 are benefiting from a quiet environment thanks to IAC Boet Stopson's exhaust gas silencers that have been fitted to the two GE LM 2500+ gas turbines on the ship.

Measuring 354m from stern to prow, the Queen Mary 2 is the world's largest transatlantic liner and her electricity requirements are naturally considerable.

The two turbines supply both the energy required for propulsion of the ship as well as the onboard electricity supply.

Each turbine generates 25MW of electricity, and the exhaust gas has a flow rate of 75kg/s, with a maximum temperature of 542C.

The silencers supplied adhere to strict performance criteria, both acoustically (important for a luxury ship such as the QM2) and as regards pressure loss.

In addition the overall weight of the installation had to be kept to a minimum - to comply with weight limits specified in the contract.

Malcolm Hewitt, newly appointed Sales Manager - Industrial, said: "Passenger liners as well as naval and military ocean going vessels have long been a strong market for IAC".

"This project for the Queen Mary 2 was actually undertaken by our French colleagues at IAC Boet Stopson, acquired by IAC in 2002".

"We lead the French silencers market at the moment and the Boet products are now also making good inroads at home in the UK".

"We intend to be market leaders here, too, in the next few years".

"Projects like this one for the first class QM2 certainly profile IAC silencers as first class and fly the flag for our technology".
