A recent alarm rationalisation seminar in Aberdeen, Scotland highlighted the level of interest in this key area of plant safety and efficiency.

In November, Industrial Control Software held an alarm rationalisation seminar in Aberdeen, Scotland.

The event was attended by delegates from many of the major petrochemical companies, highlighting the level of interest in this key area of plant safety and efficiency.

Speakers included Dr Tony Foord and Mr Bill Gulland from 4-sight Consulting, the company responsible for carrying out training courses on alarm management for EEMUA.

The aim of the seminar was to highlight some of the concerns raised by the UK Government's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for better alarm handling.

Using the EEMUA 191 "Alarm management guidelines" document as a reference, ICS was able to demonstrate how its IMAC Xpert alarm and event analysis software helps engineers to identify key performance indicators (KPIs) such as: standing alarms; alarm rectification rates; alarm priorities; alarm frequency; and sequences of alarms/events.

This came as something of a revelation to those who have only known IMAC as a printer replacement package.

One of the delegates was quoted as saying: "I've learnt more about alarm rationalisation in the last half hour than I have in the past five years".

As well as the IMAC suite of alarm monitoring and analysis products, ICS also offers training and consultancy services primarily focusing on alarm rationalisation.

More than 70% of the delegates said that their companies were currently considering alarm rationalisation as a way of improving efficiency and safety levels at their facilities.
