The Midland Branch of the Institute of Metal Finishing is holding a free seminar and tabletop exhibition on "Energy reductions" on Tuesday 10th October 2006, commencing at 1400 BST at the Birmingham Medical Institute, Harborne Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham Energy costs have recently increased and predictions for the future indicate that this trend is unlikely to be reversed

In the first paper: "Power saving in electroplating solutions", Trevor Pearson of MacDermid will explain that electroplating is a relatively low energy process for application of metals to a conductive substrate with many of the process solutions operating at or only slightly above ambient temperature.

The electron transfer processes which result in the deposition of metal occur at relatively low voltage making electroplating the most energy efficient form of metallisation.

However, there are many aspects of the overall deposition process which can be modified to reduce overall energy consumption.

It is the aim of this presentation to consider all aspects of energy consumption in the electrodeposition process and to make some suggestions as to how the process can be modified to maximise energy efficiency.

The second paper: "Chemical process to improve energy efficiency" will be presented by Neil Taylor of Atotech UK.

As well as offering improved technical functions, many modern chemical surface finishing processes offer improved efficiency over more traditional solutions.

The presentation will discuss what form these improvements can take, how they are achieved, and discuss some specific examples that illustrate the very real savings that are possible from the use of such processes.

After a refreshment break, Sarsche Wegner of Enthone Cookson Electronics will describe "Low temperature cleaners".

This presentation will introduce Enthone's cost of ownership model for low temperature cleaning systems - a concept designed to counteract rising energy prices and illustrate energy waste in the pretreatment stages.

The presentation will describe applications, limitations and first hand experiences.

Finally, Steve Sheffield from MacDermid will talk on "Low temperature high performance trivalent passivation".

For several years now, trivalent passivation processes have been available which can produce salt spray performance to or better than conventional hexavalent processes.

However, these processes operate at elevated temperature and the energy consumption can be very high, especially in the case of barrel passivation.

Processes are now available which operate at much lower temperature and can produce equivalent corrosion performance with considerable energy savings.
