The award is part of the Ninth Annual Technology and Innovation Awards program at that magazine.
From reader nominations that span the fields of science and engineering, a panel of editors selects winners that have the greatest potential for being watershed events in the commercial application of technology.
Five winners were selected for 2001.
John Teresko, senior technology editor at IndustryWeek, says many nominations describe new software solutions for product development.
"Each year we review dozens of innovative new technologies to find those most likely to advance, even reinvent the business of designing, developing, and manufacturing exciting products.
IX Speed Suite from ImpactXoft proposes a real change in the way product developers collaborate over the Internet, and it promises to close gaps in engineering productivity that have been standing open for a long time.
The company's software for simultaneous product development offers global enterprises a significant opportunity to gain a competitive edge." IX Speed is based on three underlying technologies.
IX Functional Modeling emphasizes the functions and behaviors of interacting model elements, eliminating the need for engineers to focus on the creation of lower-level modeling geometry.
IX Functional Object Representation captures the full intelligence of the model as a "design recipe" that can be shared over low-speed Internet connections.
IX Design Intent Merge automatically coordinates design modifications and blends them into the model stored on each project member's workstation.
The interlocking technologies in IX Speed serve as a foundation for Simultaneous Product Development (SPD), a method of collaboration in which members of worldwide development teams co-develop products in parallel to dramatically reduce time to market.
IX Speed combines next-generation 3D modeling for mechanical design with advanced tools for design collaboration.
