Jargon buster cuts through the ATEX jungle
ABB has published an "ATEX jargon buster" that helps motor users cut through the jungle of terms and definitions that make up the new ATEX Directives.
This includes months of self-assessment, assessor site visits, best practice reports, formal presentations and the scrutiny of a panel of industry experts, chaired by Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya KB CBE, Director of the Warwick Manufacturing Group.
From an initial 600 entries, 17 companies have made it through to the final stage, including a number of SMEs and, for the first time, several nanotechnology companies.
There are 10 category awards up for grabs as well as the overall Award for Manufacturing Excellence 2005.
The shortlist includes: AstraZeneca, BP, British Energy, Cerulean, Domino UK, Epigem, Farfield Sensors, GKN Wheels, JohnsonDiversey, Kesslers, Magal Metallifacture, Rolls Royce, Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery, Trikon Technologies, Vickers Laboratories, Western Thompson Plastics and Westland Transmissions.
Run annually since 1982 by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and backed by numerous organisations including the DTI, the MX Awards are free to enter and provide all companies taking part with a package of tailor-made benefits.
This includes over GBP 10,000 worth of consulting advice in the form of comprehensive benchmarking reports and a free diagnostic "health check" visit from the DTI's Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS).
Regardless of how well a company is doing, the MX advisory team will recommend ways in which it can improve its performance, taking into consideration each company's size and its resources.
Jacqui Smith commented: "MX commands enormous respect in UK industry by consistently delivering an in-depth analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of its entrants".
Partners and sponsors of the MX Awards 2005 include: Barclays, EEF, IBM, Kellysearch.com, MAS, Reninshaw, RSM Robson Rhodes, Sandvik Comorant, The National Business to Business Centre, The Manufacturing Foundation and the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science Engineering and Technology.
