Nearly 400 engineers turned out in force at Reading University on 8th March and unanimously agreed that the Government is not doing enough to avert an energy crisis.

The vote came at a major debate on the controversial topic where the President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Andrew Ives, urged engineers to lobby their MPs to force the Government to take action now.

Interest in the event, organised by the Thamesway Region of the IMechE and chaired by BP Engineering Director and IMechE Fellow, John Baxter, spiralled and organisers had to close the doors early after 380 engineers turned up.

Ives said: "Whichever way we go, it is likely we will have a growing reliance on gas to a greater or lesser extent, however, the timely release of the Government's Energy Review is the perfect timing and opportunity for this country's professional engineers to take a stance and encourage our MPs to back a long term strategy for energy in this country - which we are lack".

After a lively debate and key note speeches by energy experts, the engineering audience voted not enough was being done to "keep the lights on".

The IMechE, issued a response to the Environmental Audit Committee's inquiry, also called "Keeping the lights on", in November last year.

It concluded the Government must adopt an energy policy using a combination of nuclear and renewables to avert a future energy crisis.
