A group of Birmingham-based mechanical engineers are determined to bring back their profession to the heart of the region by setting up a new networking group in the city.

Over 40 Midland members of the Institution of Mechanical Engineer's (IMechE) congregated at the Birmingham Corus Hotel earlier this month to hold initial talks on the launch of the new committee.

Once established it should provide a pivotal platform for the region's mechanical engineers working across respected firms such as Jaguar, IMI, GKN as well as academic establishments.

IMechE Regional Manger, Steve Gasser, said: "Engineering is vital to industry and the region's manufacturing and economic success".

"This new committee will both enrich and support the mechanical engineering community that we look after".

Birmingham is one of the largest and most active of the IMechE Regions across the UK, with approximately 1600 IMechE members working in industry sectors such as manufacturing, power, higher education, aerospace, transport and the automotive industry.

Gasser added: "It is heartening that so many of our members take an active interest in regional developments and are willing to investigate how they could put something back into Birmingham".

"One way we can improve links in the region is by creating relevant events and giving engineers the opportunity to meet other engineers, which was lacking in the city before".

If successful, the group will be used as a pilot for other new groups across the country.
