This year's Formula Student motorsport event will take place from 6th to 8th July 2006 at Bruntingthorpe Proving Grounds near Leicester.

Europe's biggest student motorsport event, Formula Student (FS), where young engineers design, build and compete in a Formula One style race car from scratch - is just weeks away.

FS is run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and will take place from 6th to 8th July 2006 at Bruntingthorpe Proving Grounds near Leicester.

The event is a chance for some of the world's brightest young engineering students to pit their wits to produce a car from scratch - no mean feat.

This year's event promises to be bigger and better than ever with over 80 teams from all over the world (including more than 30 UK teams) taking part - each trying to win FS for the first time.

Teams from all over Europe, the USA, India, Venezuela, Canada and Slovenia will be taking part.

Skills Minister Phil Hope, MP, praised the competition saying: "FS is an excellent event which actively encourages, inspires and supports young engineers from across the world to develop academic and vocational skills in engineering".

"I will be looking forward to seeing some of the best young engineering talent in the world at this event".

He will be joined on 7th July by MP for Blaby, Andrew Robothan.

IMechE FS Manager, Brian Robinson, said: "This event unites students, tutors and industry professionals from all over the world and adds something of the glamour, excitement and adrenaline of top class motorsport to these young students' lives".

The cars undergo a series of tests at Bruntingthorpe but restrictions are placed on the car frame and engine so the students' knowledge, creativity, and imagination are also tested.

Judges will get a chance to test the cars' capabilities across design, presentation, cost, acceleration, sprint, skid-pad, endurance and fuel economy.
