The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has confirmed the appointment of Ruth Spellman as its new Chief Executive.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) has confirmed the appointment of Ruth Spellman, Chief Executive of Investors in People UK (IIPUK) as the institution's new Chief Executive.

She is to be the IMechE's first female Chief Executive since its establishment in 1847.

Spellman has been running IIP UK since 1998, an organisation responsible for promoting the IIP standard now covering over 10 million people in 27 countries and supported through 1600 assessors and advisors via a myriad of delivery partners.

Prior to joining IIP UK Spellman was HR Director for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) for seven years, leading the organisation through a major modernisation programme.

Spellman achieved an MA Economics at Girton College, Cambridge.

She joined the National Coal Board and a few years later moved to the National Economic Development Office (NEDO).

In 1986 she joined Coopers and Lybrand working with a range of industrial companies which included many engineering based organisations.

Spellman is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

This year, in a survey carried out by the journal "Human resources" Spellman was voted by readers and peers 14th out of the top 100 most influential HR movers and shakers.

Commenting on her new position, Spellman said: "I am very excited about taking on this important new role, not only from a personal point of view but also as an opportunity to further the reputation of the Institution and mechanical engineering generally".

"Indeed, it is a huge responsibility and an honour to be able to lead an organisation with such a history and tradition".

"I am so pleased to be in a position to play an important part in the promotion of engineering; the success of which I recognise as critical to the future success of UK plc".

Alec Osborn, President of IMechE said: "I and all the members of the Institution's Trustee Board and Council are very much looking forward to welcoming Ruth to the institution".

"Ruth will be joining the Institution at a very exciting time as we look to further clarify our strategy for the future against an ever faster changing world".

"Ruth will be bringing to the Institution a wealth of unique experience, a passion for developing people and strong ambassadorial skills".

"We all wish her every success in her new position".

Spellman will succeed the Institution's current Chief Executive, Sir Michael Moore, who will be retiring after having spent eight years at the helm.
