PSU users ignorant of green legislation

An IMS Research product story

A recent study from IMS Research suggests that many users of switched-mode power supplies are unaware of key European environmental legislation that will affect their products.

A recent study from IMS Research suggests that many users of switched-mode power supplies are unaware of key European environmental legislation that will affect their products.

This is surprising given the impact that such legislation will have on day-to-day operations for companies in the electronics industry.

IMS Research questioned users of switched-mode power supplies in Europe about their level of familiarity with three pieces of environmental legislation: lead-free products; the European Union WEEE Directive on treatment of waste from electrical and electronic equipment; and the European Union ROHS Directive on restrictions of the use of hazardous substances.

In each case between 20 and 40% of respondents specified that they either didn't know the regulation or hadn't heard of it.

Interestingly, US users are similarly, or better, informed than their European counterparts.
