During 2002, Western Europe experienced a significant economic downturn that had a detrimental effect on the European market for motion controls.

IMS Research, the leading motion controls market research provider, estimates that the European motion controls market suffered an overall revenue decline of approximately 7.4% in 2002.

The global economic slump along with heightened consumer hesitation due to the rising war climate, are two significant reasons for the weakened European economy and distressed production sectors.

IMS Research also estimates that a moderate recovery for motion controls sales began in the latter part of 2003 with the market experiencing an estimated 3.1% revenue growth.

Prospects are positive for the European motion controls market in 2004, according to IMS Research's latest market analysis.

As Western Europe begins to recover from the economic downturn, investment in capital goods such as machinery will increase, leading to increased motion controls sales.

The market for servo systems is forecast to experience revenue growth of 6.8% during 2004, with the greatest growth occurring in Spain and Portugal.

Stepper systems, although not forecast to experience the relatively high level of growth of servo systems in 2004, are projected to experience moderate growth, especially in the semiconductor sector.

The growth trend that began late in 2003 is expected to continue well through 2006.

Motion controls suppliers should expect to experience success on a local level, but may encounter a decrease in exports due to foreign exchange fluctuations and continuing appreciation of the Euro.

If commodity prices, such as base metals, continue to rise, as they have over the past several months, the motion controls market may suffer as suppliers attempt to manage the costs of production.
