Boom times for small motors in the Americas

An IMS Research product story

Riding the wave of the global economic upturn, the North and South American small motor market has seen monumental growth, with some suppliers having experienced as much as 40% growth in motor sales in the market in the first quarter of 2004.

This rejuvenation of the small motor market has been a breath of fresh air to manufacturers, but the question is: "will it last?".

Although growth in the industrial production sector of the North and South American region has been a mitigating factor of the re-emergent growth of the small motor market, IMS Research believes it has been the recent prosperity of the semiconductor end-equipment industry that has had the most significant impact on growth rates, especially for the stepper motor market.

The double-digit growth in the medical devices sector has also buoyed small motor sales across small motor product types.

Although IMS Research expects this growth to continue well into 2005, manufacturers should be aware that increased outsourcing of OEM facilities and rising raw material prices will have negative implications in the short and long term.

The latest data from IMS Research estimate that the North and South American small motor market was worth $1246.1 million in 2003, with an associated 292,542,081 units being sold.

The brushed DC motor segment comprises the largest proportion of the market, being valued at approximately $930 million in 2003.

Whereas the brushed DC market is estimated to be the largest, the coreless DC market is projected to experience the greatest growth, with IMS Research forecasting a market size of $83.7 million in 2008.
