Digistat RF wireless room thermostats from Invensys Climate Controls have helped Enfield Borough Council to make useful savings on the cost of upgrading heating control systems

Digistat RF wireless room thermostats from Invensys Climate Controls have helped Enfield Borough Council to make useful savings on the cost of upgrading heating control systems in its Curlew House and Merlin House residential accommodation blocks In addition, the use of these innovative roomstats - which need no wiring to connect them with the heating control system - has minimised the disruption suffered by tenants during the work, as well as reducing installation time

The Digistat RF roomstats form part of a completely new control system designed by Viterra for use in conjunction with the existing gas-fired communal heating installations.

The new system gives tenants full control over their heating systems, as well as accurately metering the energy used in each dwelling, and providing convenient pre-payment facilities.

To provide the new facilities, a specially manufactured panel has been installed in each flat in Curlew and Merlin Houses.

The panel is fitted with a Invensys Climate Controls Lifestyle programmer, to allow tenants to select heating periods; a Viterra energy meter and smart-card pre-payment device; and Erie motorised valves which were also supplied by Invensys Climate Controls.

The Digistat RF roomstat is mounted remotely from the control panel, in a location where it is readily accessible for adjustment, and where it can accurately monitor the room temperature.

Conventional roomstats cost a little less than Digistat RF units, but if they had been used, it would have been necessary to fix external trunking to the walls within every flat to accommodate the wiring.

With 129 flats involved, this would have meant additional time and expense, and the tenants would have had to live with unsightly trunking runs throughout their flats.

Using Digistat RF units avoided all of these problems and, overall, provided an exceptionally economical solution.

Other components from Invensys Climate Controls also made important contributions to the success of the project.

Erie motorised valves were chosen because of their proven reliability, their positive cut-off, and their ability to withstand the higher-than-normal pressures encountered in central-boiler communal heating systems.

Lifestyle programmers were selected on the basis of versatility, and because Invensys Climate Controls was able and willing to produce a customised version to meet the precise needs of these types of projects.

Invensys Climate Controls Limited is a subsidiary of Invensys, one of the UK's leading diversified engineering groups, which was formed by the merger of BTR and Siebe, and which employs over 100,000 people worldwide.
