When Radamec Defence Systems was asked to manufacture platforms for mounting surveillance pods onto Sea King helicopters, the design called for precision pre-loaded bearings able to support a quickly moving, unbalanced load, working in demanding atmospheric conditions In order to ensure the highest quality and reliability, the company chose INA Bearing Company to supply the special bearings required for the project

Ina website contains massive bearing databank
Access to data on most INA products is now freely available via a completely revised website at www.ina.com, which is in both English and German.
Radamec designs and manufactures electro-optical surveillance, tracking and fire-control systems, servo-controlled stabilised platforms and TV cameras.
Having established an international reputation among defence agencies and major corporations for supplying technically advanced solutions to demanding electro-optical and servo requirements, the company cannot afford to take any chances when specifying components.
INA double row angular contact bearings, 47mm diameter x 25mm wide, were used for the pitch and roll pivots in the surveillance pod platforms.

New possibilities from crossed roller bearings
Two new series of crossed roller bearings from INA offer the potential for innovative bearing arrangements with a high performance/cost ratio.
A camera is mounted in an overhang position in the pod, causing an overturning moment to be created by the unbalanced load, the angular contact bearings being particularly suited to combined loads.
Due to the camera having to move very quickly and accurately to pinpoint and keep contact with the target whilst the helicopter is flying, rigidity without stiffness of movement was of paramount importance for the mounting platform, again the angular contact bearings being well matched to the application.
A total of four surveillance pods have already been manufactured by Radamec and a further 14 are planned, each with four bearings specially manufactured by INA for the project.
The helicopters with attached pods, being for military and civilian use, need to fly in all weather conditions, over both land and sea.
Because of the demanding atmospheric conditions the bearings would be working in, corrosion protection was a major consideration in order to ensure a long operating life.
INA special Corrotect coating, an extremely thin electro plated surface coating, with a coating thickness of 0.5æ to 3æ was applied to all the bearings to protect against moisture and salt spray.
Corrotect gives all round rust protection for all machined surfaces, including chamfers and radii and is able to provide long term rust protection beneath seals, giving a significant increase in service life.
