Cool bearings boost machine-tool
performance

FAG has developed an all-new generation of "low temperature" spindle bearings for machine tools.

FAG has developed an all-new generation of "low temperature" spindle bearings for machine tools "Low temperature" bearings owe their name to their characteristic feature

When compared with other bearings currently available, they operate at significantly reduced temperatures approximately 10C lower than the average.

At a given temperature this will result in speed increases of up to 10%.

This is an exciting milestone toward reliably controlling the speed indices n x dm of 2.5 million for grease lubricated bearings while setting a new standard for spindle bearings as a whole.

Thanks to a modified internal design focused on lubricant guidance, the progress has been maximised.

The design concept is based on the idea that the cage is positioned above the area in which the lubricant (due to centrifugal forces) gathers.

As a result friction is reduced along with the temperature resulting in the increase in performance capacity.

With a reduction in lubricant stressing, the life of the bearing will also be prolonged.

Lower friction inside the bearing means the motor output can be throttled down which is especially interesting where small high-speed spindles with low cutting columns are concerned.

The temperature of the drive elements can also be reduced with the help of low temperature bearings.

Lower temperatures ensure operational reliability as the good lubricating conditions depend on the viscosity of the lubricant, which is in turn affected predominantly by the temperatures inside the bearing.

The danger of mixed friction and the resulting wear and tear on the bearing decreases as a result of the cooler temperatures.

The new bearing generation is available for all series and designs of FAG spindle bearings which can be supplied with ceramic rolling elements or seals at both ends.

These can be found in direct lube design or as X-life ultra bearings with rings of Cronidur 30.

The range can be recognised by its TX at the cage position in the bearing code. Request a free brochure from Schaeffler (UK) ...
