Encoders benefit from optical technology

An Inmoco product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 21, 2006

Optics technologies provide smart encoders with programmability, miniature sensor size, broad alignment tolerances, accuracy enhancement, optical index and many operating resolutions and speeds.

Inmoco has introduced the Mercury range of smart encoders from MicroE Systems.

Offering linear resolutions from 5um to 5nm and rotary resolutions from 6600 to 67.2 million counts/rev, the encoders are based on MicroE Systems' Smart Precision electronics and Pure Precision optics technologies.

This gives them the advantages of programmability, miniature sensor size, broad alignment tolerances for easy set-up, accuracy enhancement, optical index, and wide range of operating resolutions and speeds.

Pure Precision is an optical design that gives users flexibility, a high fidelity signal and a wide resolution range.

It uses the diffraction of reflected light to create a sensor with a shallow, wide detection plane.

The result is that the sensors are half the height, one tenth the volume and a fraction of the weight.

One sensor design works for linear and rotary applications.

They can be aligned in under 30s.

In many cases the sensor can be mounted to a reference surface and will operate without further adjustment.

Because their signal can be interpolated to extreme levels, the encoders can meet every resolution requirement, from micron to nanometer level.

The encoder family includes 21 models.

This means OEM engineers can select the encoder model that is right for their application - programmable, digital, analogue and vacuum models.
