Employers are obliged to assess workplace noise levels and ensure that workers' hearing is protected from excessive noise at their place of work.

Controlling workplace noise is a crucial issue for many companies.

Constant exposure to high levels of noise can damage hearing and also threaten employees' health through stress or other noise-related illnesses.

Under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, which came into force in April 2006, employers are obliged to assess workplace noise levels and ensure that workers' hearing is protected from excessive noise at their place of work.

There is therefore a greater need to have properly trained and competent staff members who can carry out workplace noise risk assessments on behalf of their company to comply with the regulations.

The Institute of Acoustics offers a five-day certificate of competence course in workplace noise risk assessment which is designed to fulfil the requirements of the regulations.

It addresses the legal and practical aspects of noise control in the workplace and offers a nationally recognised qualification.

The course is held twice a year in the Spring and Autumn and takes place at accredited centres throughout the UK.

It is assessed by a written examination and a practical noise survey.

At the end of the course, successful participants will have a better understanding of the practical implications of noise, be able to carry out a noise risk survey and to make recommendations to their company on how to reduce and manage noise exposure so that they comply with the requirements of the regulations.

The institute also offers two other certificate courses in environmental noise management and the management of occupational exposure to hand/arm vibration.
