Inertial Aerosystems launches digital compass

An Inertial Aerosystems UK product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 22, 2008

Inertial Aerosystems has released a surface-mount, three-axis, multi-chip module for low-field magnetic sensing, with a digital interface for compassing and magnetometry.

Designated the HMC 5843, it is manufactured by US-based Honeywell Aerospace.

It includes three 1043 series magnetoresistive sensors and a Honeywell-developed ASIC containing amplification, strap drivers, offset cancellation, 12-bit ADC and an IC serial bus interface.

It measures 4 x 4 x 1.3mm surface-mount, with low height and weight.

By using anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) technology, this product has many advantages over similar products, such as being sensitive to low fields and having low hysteresis.

The sensors feature precision in axis sensitivity and linearity, solid-state construction with very low cross-axis sensitivity, designed to measure both direction and magnitude of Earth's magnetic fields, from tens of microgauss to 6 gauss.

Designed for high-volume, cost-sensitive OEM designs, and compatible with high- speed SMT assembly, it is available in tape and reel packaging.

Compatible with battery-powered applications, it complies with current environmental standards.

Demonstration and pin-out boards for product evaluation and development are available.

This device can be used in auto-navigation systems, personal navigation devices, magnetometers and consumer electronics.
