Maseter-slave system simplifies winding
operation
The Optidrive Plus 3GV was controlled via Modbus RTU, connected through an Invertek-supplied splitter to a touch Panel and PLC.
Invertek Drives' Optidrive has been used on a winding machine for cabling polyester flexible conduit This application makes use of the in-built master- slave function of the Optidrive Plus 3GV, which provides a simple yet flexible means of coupling a network of drives together using the Optibus protocol

Feedback module provides speed control
The external encoder feedback module allows the Optidrive Plus 3GV to be used in applications where precise speed control is required.
The master drive transmits its operating status and output frequency automatically to any connected slave drives and the slaves then follow the operations of the master drive, with independently adjustable speed scaling.
In this application, the speed ratio scaling for the slave drive, the Optidrive Plus 3GV was controlled via Modbus RTU, connected through an Invertek-supplied splitter to a touch Panel and PLC.
A key benefit of this approach is the ease and speed with which the system can be set up.
A single parameter configures the Optidrive Plus 3GV for master or slave operation, while a second parameter allows the speed scaling control to be selected from the Modbus communication network.
From the operator panel, the machine operator then chooses the speed for the master drive, the ratio for the slave and distance of advance for the master.
The system is fully digital and simplifies this application enormously.
This simple approach provides a cost-effective solution, eliminating the need for large amounts of time spent programming a PLC to calculate ratios and speeds.
In this application the PLC is only used for control of digital input and output functions and encoder counting to stop the motor at the required distance.
The master - slave arrangement of the Optidrives executes the main task with the operator panel transferring data to the drives as recipes.
The end result is a simple, flexible yet powerful solution that suits hundreds of applications where ratio control is required.
