SF6 leak detector makes switchgear
production safe
Ion Science have recently completed a three year development programme in response to industry demands for a portable, ultra high sensitivity non-radioactive leak detector.
Ion Science have recently completed a three year development programme in response to industry demands for a portable, ultra high sensitivity non-radioactive leak detector The result is the recently launched Gas Check SF6 which has been so well received, it was a finalist in the Environmental and Innovation sections of the industry awards last November

Gas leak in hydrogen cooled generator - sorted
When Edison Mission Energy had difficulty locating a gas leak in one of its hydrogen cooled generators, it approached leak detection experts Ion Science for the solution
The design brief was to develop a viable alternative to traditional high sensitivity ECD detectors which, because they contain radioactive Ni63 and high pressure Argon gas, are subject to registration and strict controls making them difficult to transport, especially by air freight.
Another disadvantage is that high purity Argon gas is simply not available in many parts of the world, particularly developing countries where Switchgear is being introduced.
For reasons of sheer practicality, Ion Science designers assumed that the Gas Check SF6 would be used without instructions by operators for whom English is not their first language.
Response to leaks had to be virtually instant and the unit had to function without any of the contamination issues associated with traditional ECD instruments.
The three-button handset is lightweight and has an ergonomically designed offset for operator comfort and which allows both the display and the probe tip to be seen easily in use.
Ion Science responded to industry demands and provided a 15m long plug-in connection between the handgun and consul.
The SF6 automatically adjusts itself to recharge from any electrical supply between 85 and 265V AC to give an operational battery life in the field of 10 hours.
