The Instrumentation, Systems and Automation Society has released its study guide for the new Certified Industrial Maintenance Mechanics (CIMM) programme.

The Instrumentation, Systems and Automation Society has released its study guide for the new Certified Industrial Maintenance Mechanics (CIMM) programme The guide provides practice questions and answers for the upcoming CIMM examinations, which will start on 7th October at ISA Expo 2004

The CIMM exam will test competency in four performance domains that have been identified as essential for maintenance mechanics: maintenance practices, preventive and predictive maintenance, troubleshooting and analysis, and corrective maintenance.

"Everything that the mechanic needs to be able to do falls into those four dimensions", says Rod Lincoln, Chair of the CIMM steering team and Manager of Organizational Development and Training at Cytec Industries.

"To my knowledge the job has never been broken down in that manner before".

According to Lincoln, the USA is the only industrialized nation that doesn't certify its maintenance mechanics.

In recent years OSHA has expressed its desire to apply stricter oversight on how manufacturers train their maintenance staff.

The CIMM programme represents the manufacturing sector's first viable certification for industrial maintenance mechanics.

Copies of the study guide can be ordered through the CIMM website.

The website also features detailed information about the program including exam dates, key knowledge and skills, and a detailed programme handbook.
