The Instrumentation, Systems and Automation Society has published the job analysis study for its Certified Automation Professional (CAP) programme.

The Instrumentation, Systems and Automation Society has published the job analysis study for its Certified Automation Professional (CAP) programme.

The 77-page report, available from the ISA website, is free for ISA members and costs nonmembers $150.

The release of the job analysis study represents a significant milestone for the new certification programme, and confirms the steps taken to ensure that the exam is "content-valid".

According to Jim Henderson, VP of Castle Worldwide, the psychometric firm hired to perform the study: "The job analysis study is a delineation of the tasks that are involved in performing a job".

"Generally the tasks can be grouped together in very general areas of responsibility that are called domains".

Henderson goes on to explain that there are knowledge and skill lists associated with each job task.

To competently perform his or her job, an automation professional is expected to know and be able to do the tasks delineated in the job analysis study.

The job analysis study is the blueprint for the CAP exam and guarantees that exam takers will be tested on the basic knowledge and competencies that automation professionals need to perform their jobs effectively.

In addition to identifying the knowledge and job tasks performed by the automation professional, the report also evaluates the importance, criticality, and frequency of these tasks.

The ISA is accepting applications for the first offering of the CAP exam scheduled for 7th October at ISA Expo 2004 in Houston, Texas.

Additional exams will be given 9th October and 11th December at select locations.

The application deadline for the October exam dates is 1st September 2004, and 29th October is the application deadline for the 11th December exam offerings.
