ITT provides connector for in-flight entertainment

An ITT Interconnect Solutions product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Sep 23, 2008

ITT Interconnect Solutions has provided one of its aviation customers with a fully integrated turn-key solution for an in-flight entertainment system (IFE) used in commercial aircraft.

ITT manufactured a cost-effective custom ARINC 600 connector to stringent technical specifications.

ITT ensured its own customer and the eventual end customer, the aircraft integrator, were satisfied, by offering a competitive 'mutual programme' price for the LRU connector and the aircraft-side mounting tray connectors needed by the aircraft integrator.

No additional assembly drawings or instructions were needed by their customer as the ARINC 600 custom connector had a single part number, a major benefit as the data package and configuration for the 4MCU ARINC 600 are controlled by the FAA.

The ARINC 600 enclosure required a customised connector body and insert to reduce EMI/RFI emissions, the ability to handle high speed/gigabit Ethernet signalling and design features to minimise connector handling and chassis assembly time.

ITT's solution included a custom-size two shell, machined to reduce EMI/RFI emissions, and ITT Quadrax contacts for gigabit Ethernet channels.

Incorporating custom insert arrangements eliminated unused positions and pre-loaded inserts with extended tail-contacts achieved faster PCB mounting.

The polarising keys were pre-loaded and fixed PEM nuts were used to ensure there was no loose hardware on installation.
