Bioprocessing in focus in Philadelphia

An ISPE product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Feb 22, 2007

The 5th Annual Bioprocessing Institute will be held from 21st to 25th May 2007 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

The International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) along with the Society of Bioprocessing Professionals (SBP) will present the 5th Annual Bioprocessing Institute from 21st to 25th May 2007 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

This highly regarded Institute will feature both introductory and advanced courses directly applicable to biomanufacturing, and will give delegates the opportunity to learn from and share insights with 60 bioprocessing professionals.

Participants will choose from nine courses, which include workshops to quickly apply knowledge, along with lectures, case studies, problem-solving sessions, hands-on learning, exhibits, and a plant tour.

Bioprocessing - the bridge that takes products produced by genetically engineered organisms from research to commercially available therapeutics - requires the co-operation of many disciplines to continue the advancement and growth to manufacture cost effective, high quality bioproducts.

SBP was formed in 2003 to advance bioprocessing technology through the application of science, engineering, quality principles, and experience in manufacturing, by a core group of industry, equipment suppliers, and academic leaders with more than 200 years of combined experience in bioprocessing and 60 years combined experience in biotechnology application training for pilot plant and commercial biomanufacturing.

In November 2006, SBP integrated into ISPE, a not-for profit, global group of more than 23,000 pharmaceutical manufacturing professionals, established in 1980.

"These courses provide the opportunity to learn from people who have been directly involved in the application of the bioprocessing principles in the development design and operation of biomanufacturing plants", said Roger Brunkow, President of SBP and cochairman of ISPE's Biotechnology Community of Practice.

"For four years the Institute has provided an excellent opportunity for understanding of application and networking".

"Now that ISPE and SBP have joined forces, the Institute will be stronger than ever", said Brunkow.

Information such as process and facility development, cell culture, separation technologies, purification, and processing scale-up, will be presented at a basic application level and in advanced workshops that build the understanding of problem solving behind the applications of scale-up and process development.
