Microwaves check moisture in coffee

An Isatec product story

Microwave based instruments measure moisture at all stages of the coffee manufacturing process.

Tews Elektronik provides microwave based instruments to measure moisture at all stages of the coffee manufacturing process.

Working with coffee roasting machine maker Probat and a German supermarket chain, the company has shown its nondestructive process to be fast, accurate and independent of colour.

German Government regulations, which require manufacturers to produce coffee to a specified moisture content level, have brought about the need to have accurate control over each stage of the manufacturing process.

Tews microwave resonance technology based instruments provide the tools to let the manufacturer test the product at any stage without the need for pre-processing such as grinding.

The moisture content of the whole product is measured, without heating, and the accuracy is not influenced by density or the surface of the product, for example whole beans or ground coffee.

The Neumann Coffee Group uses Tews Elektronik products, primarily the MW3140 and MW3150, to measure the moisture in green beans at-line or in the laboratory.

If online measurement is required further down the process, either a planar sensor, the MW3260, or an automated bypass system, the MW3200, can be used.

The MW3200 has also proven to be effective for measuring moisture and density of ground coffee before packaging to improve filling quality.
