Automotive test lab receives accreditation

An Intertech Development Company product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 25, 2005

The first commercial automotive test lab of its kind in China has received accreditation from the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation for its Shanghai laboratory.

Intertek Automotive Services (IAS), the first commercial automotive test lab of its kind in China, has received accreditation from A2LA (the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation) for its Shanghai laboratory.

Through the accreditation process, IAS demonstrated the appropriate qualifications to produce technically valid test data and results.

IAS has been accredited by A2LA for a variety of mechanical testing, including: adhesion; aging; chemical resistance; salt spray/humidity; thermal aging/thermal cycling; environmental performance testing; electrical/electronic tests (electrical resistance, voltage drop, AC/DC voltage source and measure, insulation resistance, wattage); tensile/elongation; impact resistance; impact test; vibration; vibration with environmental; simulated durability testing; and subjective squeak and rattle.

Approved types of materials and products include automotive components, consumer products, computer components, military/aerospace components, cables, connectors, HVAC and horns.

A2LA, founded in 1978, is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to the formal recognition of competent testing and calibration laboratories, inspection bodies, proficiency testing providers and reference material producers.

Laboratory accreditation is defined as formal recognition of an organisation's technical competency to perform specific tests, types of tests, or calibrations.

The assessors used to conduct the laboratory accreditation assessments must be technical experts in their field.

The assessors must verify the laboratory's specific capabilities that are then listed on a "scope of accreditation".

Laboratories must also participate in proficiency testing on a regular basis to demonstrate their competency.

IAS will initially focus on automotive performance testing, primarily for electronics, audio and interior components, including: vibration (sine, random, shock); thermal aging (walk-in chambers, drive-in chambers); thermal cycling; programmable chamber exposures; temperature/humidity; and BSR (buzz, squeak, rattle).

Future expansion plans call for the addition of EMC testing in 2006, multi-axis vibration/accelerated stress testing (AST) and other automotive testing and engineering services.

"Intertek Automotive Services is proud to receive our A2LA accreditation".

"This will enable us to provide a wide range of testing services to our clients and produce testing and related reports to the level required by overseas car companies in the US and Europe as well as a wide range of other industries", states Brett Margolis, General Manager.
