The Presidency of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) is set to pass into Australian hands for the first time in nearly 20 years.

The Presidency of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) is set to pass into Australian hands for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Chief Scientist to the Australian Government, Dr Robin Batterham will succeed to the role of IChemE President in 2004.

Dr Batterham will be the Institution's first Australian President since Professor Rolf Prince in 1986.

A graduate chemical engineer from Melbourne University, where he also completed his doctorate, Dr Batterham was awarded a CSIRO post-doctoral fellowship, which he undertook at ICI's Central Research Laboratories in the UK.

He returned to CSIRO, rapidly progressing to Chief of the Division of Mineral and Process Engineering in 1985.

Three years later he crossed to the private sector joining CRA, now part of Rio Tinto, where he fulfils the role of Chief Technologist.

He was appointed Chief Scientist of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1999.

Dr Batterham sees chemical engineering as being central to the delivery of sustainable development, a theme that will figure strongly during his presidency.

On receiving news of his nomination he said, "I am both delighted and honoured to be nominated for the IChemE Presidency.

Chemical engineers have much to contribute in a world that is moving towards sustainability.

Indeed our role is somewhat unique".

He went on to say: "We possess a detailed knowledge of process engineering coupled with an understanding of novel science and technology across a broad range of disciplines.

Chemical engineers can utilise this potent mix of skills to develop new approaches to some of our most challenging global problems.

I look forward to contributing to the IChemE and building upon the exciting contribution that chemical engineers are making to sustainable development".

As well as his membership and fellowship of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, Dr Batterham is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and a Fellow and past Councillor of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.

Dr Batterham delivered one of six major vision presentations at the 6th World Congress of Chemical Engineering at Melbourne in 2001.

Entitled "The profession, the community and the environment", his lecture sparked lively exchanges among an international audience.

Delegates also got to see a different side of Dr Batterham later on the same day when he performed an organ recital at the Melbourne Concert Hall, sharing the platform with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

In February 2003, Dr Batterham will be visiting the UK to present the Danckwerts Lecture at IChemE's new London headquarters in Portland Place, London W1.
