Frome-based company Brewis Engineering is making inroads into Poland, winning GBP 10,000 of new business in the new EU accession state with help from UK Trade and Investment, the Government organisation that provides support services for UK companies trading overseas.

The company, which specialises in the design, development and manufacture of equipment for the trenchless technology industry, secured the international business after participating in UK Trade and Investment's Passport to export programme.

Trenchless technology uses a wide range of methods for installing underground systems, such as pipes and cables, with minimal surface disruption.

Brewis Engineering had previous international trade experience and was already doing business in several markets, but having lost a major distributor, the company needed to reassess its international sales efforts.

A more targeted approach to its overseas business was needed.

Brian Cooper, UK Trade and Investment's international trade advisor at Business Link Somerset immediately put them on the right track.

Cooper, who specialises in the advanced engineering sector, signed the company to the Passport to export initiative and through in-depth analysis, helped identify Poland as an important potential market.

Brewis Engineering staff received training in key areas of international trade.

UK Trade and Investment also provided funding for the company to attend a trade mission to Poland in October last year, during which it was able to meet with potential clients identified by the British Embassy in Poland.

Brewis Engineering remained in contact with one potential client and after returning to Poland again this summer to attend a trenchless technology exhibition, appointed the company to sell Brewis Engineering products in Poland.

Over GBP 10,000 worth of orders for Poland and neighbouring countries are already lined up as a result.

Rod Brewis, Managing Director of Brewis Engineering, said: "The most important aspect of the Passport initiative is the support you receive".

"When you are new to exporting it is really important to have someone on side who can advise on what you are doing right and where you're going wrong".

"It is such a confidence boost to have someone to provide a sounding board for your ideas".

"Brian Cooper was a fantastic help to us and had the experience and expertise to help us know where to go and how to avoid common pitfalls".
