Twenty three UK based companies are currently showcasing their innovations in security technology during a trade mission to Boston and Washington DC.

Twenty three UK based companies, including nine from the South East, are currently showcasing their innovations in security technology during a "Science for security" trade mission to Boston and Washington DC from that runs until 3rd November 2006, organised by UK Trade and Investment (UKTI).

This national mission builds on the recent agreement between the UK and US governments on co-operation in science and technology for critical infrastructure protection and is the culmination of many months' preparation and planning involving a wide range of government departments.

The organisations taking part are representative of the best of British security technology providers including university research teams, new innovators, and established market leaders.

Phil Hodgins, UKTI South East's specialist adviser on security says: "The sharing of technology and intelligence between the two countries is a vital tool in combating the global threat of terrorism".

"This trade mission enables UK security technology providers to meet top US Government contractors and gain a rare insight into the high level UK and US Government collaboration on science and technology".

"Consequently we saw an unprecedented level of interest in this mission with over 70 businesses applying to take part".

"This demonstrates the maturity of the UK security market and justifies its reputation as a hotbed of world-class security innovation".

In Boston on 30th October, UKTI hosted a series of workshops on a range of topics including advances in technology, defence priorities and joint funding programmes.

Speakers included Ranch Kimball, Massachusetts Secretary of Economic Development, and John Lindfield, UKTI East Coast Regional Director.

In Washington on 2nd November, high-level speakers from the government and private sectors will give presentations on current trends in the following areas: chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive detection, prevention and treatment; critical national infrastructure protection; computer forensics and information assurance; emergency response and consequence management.
