Custom-made bolts maintain heat exchanger tension

Anwil, one of the largest chemical producers in Poland, has applied RotaBolt technology to improve production processes and efficiencies at one of its plants.

The company manufactures nitrogen fertilisers and plastics and has fitted RotaBolts to a high capacity heat exchanger at its fertiliser plant.

The plant has been running at full capacity, without shut down, since the technology was applied at the beginning of September.

Prior to the application of RotaBolts, the company had experienced a long track record of issues on the heat exchanger, which uses hydrogen as one of the process gases.

The integrity of the exchanger's main flange, over 1400mm in diameter, had caused many plant shutdowns.

As part of the company's commitment to continually improve its production processes and environmental impact, it had identified that tension control of the main flange was critical to maintaining integrity.

The fertiliser plant's Maintenance Manager, Artur Kwiatkowski, ordered M80 x 770mm RotaBolts from BP Techem, the official distributor for the James Walker Group in Poland.

Working closely with RotaBolt, the required load across the main flange was calculated at a value of 90 tonnes per bolt.

The RotaBolts were quickly manufactured and on site application took place at the beginning of September, under supervision of BP Techem.

The main flange joint has retained its integrity since the fitting of the RotaBolts with the plant running at full capacity without shut down.

Anwil is currently in discussion with BP Techem about the further application of RotaBolt tension control on other pressure vessels, heat exchangers and reactors, all of which have direct influence on the plant's efficiency and productivity.
