Fugitive emissions from hard-working control valves can now be cut to well below 50ppm claim James Walker about its new Supagraf Control gland packing.

It seals efficiently for over 100,000 stem strokes without gland re-adjustment, and its very low coefficient of friction enhances accurate valve movement claimed the company.

James Walker's Andrew Goulding commented on the leak tightness claim: "A five-ring set of Supagraf Control showed maximum emission levels of 10ppm to 15ppm without gland re-tightening after 1,100 stem strokes with five thermal cycles from ambient to 160 degrees C." Although far fewer control valves than on-off valves are used at industrial and petrochemical sites, control valves are much more likely to leak at the stem gland due to their continuous operation.

Supagraf Control is said to combat that with long-term fugitive emission control.

Over 100,000 valve cycles have been performed to below 500ppm emissions, without gland adjustment, when working with methane at 40bar.

In addition, third party tests by a major valve manufacturer show that after 10,800 cycles at 20C and 50bar, followed by 16,700 cycles at 280C and 50bar, the leakage was less than 2.2 x 10-4 mbar.litre per second.

Supagraf Control's construction of high purity exfoliated graphite ribbon is reinforced with a non-metallic structure.

It also incorporates a lubricant package that prevents graphite pick-up on valve stems - which causes judder and hinders smooth action.

The packing also has a wide temperature range of -200C to +350C, plus the ability to form part of a fire-safe valve said James Walker.

Supagraf Control is supplied ex-stock boxed in eight metre lengths for on-site maintenance economy, or as precision moulded rings and sets for valve assembly and refurbishment.

It is manufactured in square sections from 3mm upwards to suit all standard control valves.
