Integrated bearing mechanism is "tops"
for BMW
An integrated high performance bearing and threaded shaft has proved the ideal solution to the challenge of creating a robust closing mechanism for vehicle soft tops at BMW.
An integrated high performance bearing and threaded shaft, produced by bearing specialist Jesa, has proved the ideal solution to the challenge of creating a robust closing mechanism for vehicle soft tops at BMW The design is being adopted for a number of models, including the new Z4

Special bearing maintains perfect positioning
A special bearing developed for high-speed elevators enables accurate positioning to be maintained while minimising noise levels within the cabin.
Key requirements are to avoid corrosion, accommodate high bidirectional axial loading and provide long-term, trouble-free performance.
The unit from Jesa uses a four-point, single-row full-compliment bearing manufactured from corrosion-resistant steel and lubricated with water-resistant grease.
The bearing inner race is produced as an integral part of the threaded shaft which also incorporates a low friction Teflon nut and a steel slide.
Not only have the key design objectives been met but as it is supplied to BMW as a single complete unit, it contributes to savings in terms of logistics, assembly and inspection costs.
It fits within the same space envelope as earlier approaches and requires less power.
A substantial increase in bidirectional axial capacity is achieved when compared with the standard bearings previously used.
It also has low operational friction and a service life estimated at three times that of its forerunners.
