Fans contribute to car park fire safety

The vital role that fans play in car park ventilation applications has been demonstrated by four projects in which Dublin-based Fantech Ventilation has supplied bespoke fans.
The projects - three in Ireland and one in Jersey - involved a number of different fan types to provide the venting of smoke and exhaust fumes from underground car parks.
The role of dual ventilation in fully enclosed car parks in fire safety terms is an important one.
In the event of a fire, it is vital that a method of effectively removing the smoke is in place; not only to help ensure a safe evacuation process but also to allow the fire and rescue services to gain safe access in order to tackle the fire.
For this reason, the use of impulse fans in enclosed car parks is being increasingly employed throughout Europe.
For a three-storey car park in Moycullen, County Galway, Fantech worked closely with Automatic Smoke Ventilation Systems (ASVS), employing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling software to visualise how smoke would move throughout the car park in the event of a fire.
The computer model allows a real-time simulation of different designs and systems to be conducted to identify the optimum approach before the selection process begins.
'This provides the client with the assurance that what is being proposed will actually work,' said Brendan O'Toole, managing director of Fantech.
This alliance between Fantech's design, manufacture and bespoke build expertise and ASVS' design and application experience led to the development of a system that comprised eight SLCS100 Smokevent extract fans, 16 attenuators and 40 impulse fans.
The car park project lead to Fantech also supplying the nearby Moycullen Supervalue retail store with an additional four smoke extract fans.
Two further projects in Ireland saw the installation of 34 bespoke 560mm diameter impulse fans manufactured by Fantech to the specific requirements of the design engineer for a car park in Carrickmines, and 19 fans (five smoke extract and 14 impulse) for the Patrick Street car park in Cork.
Over in Jersey, the design of a new bus station, complete with car park, saw Fantech supply eight impulse fans following an existing client referring the station developers to Fantech.
'Car park ventilation is becoming an increasingly important part of our business and this has been reflected by the introduction of our new website that allows specifiers to see what fan options are available,' said O'Toole.
